This is my personal blog, a journal of my life; my blog of pretty things (et cetera) is here. Twenty-three. Might as well be five.
I just moved to Portland, OR, so if you're a Portland-living person, say hi! New friends for a new city are much appreciated.

DON'T GIVE NONE FUCKS.
December 26th

That Christmas special was fantastic. I love ending Christmas day with Doctor Who.

I discovered upon opening my gifts today that my parents’ method of Christmas shopping is buying things and then showing me those things while we’re out shopping together to see if I like them. 90% of the time I don’t, and then I open the gifts and they say “sorry, we bought that before we knew you didn’t wear/use/whatever that thing.” They don’t seem to understand that I appreciate the gifts no matter what, and will use them no matter what.

the haul:

  • my parents staying awake to watch Doctor Who with me even though they were both exhausted from the family party
  • kindle fire
  • circle scarf
  • oven pot (slow-cooked veg french onion soup, here I come!)
  • Tegan & Sara’s Get Along
  • mad sweater tights
  • a hammered metal bracelet
  • a collection of mini alcohol bottles, all different kinds, about 20 of them—courtesy of the family gift exchange, my dad snagged it for me
  • two bottles of wine and a bottle of olive oil, keeping the olive oil and giving my mom the wine—courtesy of the family gift exchange
  • cheese grater—courtesy of the family gift exchange, mom snagged it for me

Christmas was really small this year. About 25 people, maybe 30, but that’s tiny for us. Katie and her family couldn’t make it because of car trouble, Steve and his family stayed in Washington, et cetera. We skyped with Steve & Holli & their kids, which was cute. Kim (almost 20) brought her boyfriend, which I feel like shouldn’t happen until you’re engaged, but he’s a nice guy and he’s been around for a few years. Alexis (19) IS engaged, but her fiance is a Marine and currently stationed in Bahrain. Stacey (29) was rather disturbed by this because she is single, but I told her I admired that she put her career first—she’s a lawyer with her own business and she isn’t even 30, she doesn’t need a husband right now.

The gift game was great this year, though the pickings were a little lackluster. Too many sets of lotto cards, which I don’t care about at all. The funniest one was the one my dad brought: gummies soaked in everclear, hilariously disgusting. I made an alliance with my dad so he could snag the mini bottles if they got stolen from me (they did, he did) and then got the wine for myself for the sole purpose of getting the olive oil that came with them. I’m collecting kitchen things, obviously.

Excellent holiday. Great times with a great family.

Trying to find the interview I did with my dad about the Twelfth Street Riots because I apparently failed at naming and saving the file in a reasonable place, I stumble upon a file called “papa interview” that I did for a human sexuality class. It includes this gem:

"I was eighteen when my Dad said: ‘I’m sure you know all about sex by now, so I am just going to give you the advice my Dad gave me. Keep your mouth shut and your zipper up.’ That was the sum total of my father’s sex talk."

Ah, Grandpa, you were a hilarious man. I miss you.

I asked my parents, “Can you scan and send me that adorable photo of me in my halloween tiger suit with Grandpa?”
My father responded, “I just wanted to say that it was very heart warming for you to refer to your Grandfather as adorable. I just know that you weren’t referring to yourself as such, even if, on occasion, we thought so, as you will see by what we send.”
My mom sent this set of photos and said, “my sweetie.. still dressing up. ;)”
(And you know, I think I was referring to Grandpa… look at him!)
(Also I’ve been informed that the first photo is me dressing up like Shirley Temple in The Little Princess… of course.)

Today is my mom’s 50th birthday. I couldn’t be there but luckily my cousin Stacey took this gorgeous photo of her! (And my father’s impressive beard!)

My parents called at 6am shouting about how they were evacuating me now, that the storm had gotten worse and was going to ruin Purchase for days and death and pestilence or something. Then they got here and realized that there’s already generators set up and tree service people going around and decided I could stay. Then they went out and bought me mad supplies, including a Toy Story candle. Meanwhile, the maintenance guys came and fixed my window.

Roisin and I taped Xs on the windows (so if the glass breaks it sticks together) and I’ll tape a tarp over the door later.

We’ll be waiting out Hurricane Irene on mattresses in my hallway, which has no windows and is conveniently connected to my windowless bathroom. So glad I live on the second story, this campus is going to be flooded. A new episode of Doctor Who airs in a few hours, as well!
